Short background story

Rwanda is a founding member of the African Union and is an active member of the Organization.

Rwanda hosted the African Union Summit in July 2016. African leaders at the Summit mandated, President Paul Kagame to lead the Institutional reform of the AU. In 2018, Rwanda was elected to Chair the African Union. During the year, landmark decisions were taken among which include: Signing of the AfCFTA Agreement in Kigali, Adoption of the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, Launch of the Single Air transport Market, Establishment of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), Launch of the revitalized AU Peace Fund and Reform of the AU Commission.

Rwanda has also contributed to Africa’s Peace and Security matters and has served on the AU Peace and Security Council for a two year term in 2006-2007; 2008-2009; 2010-2011; 2016-2017 and 2018-2019.
